This second English enhancement course is aimed at further developing your English and communication skills to enable you to meet the academic demands of Nursing Studies. It has a strong focus on oral skills, but will also provide further training in essay writing. 

Learning objectives

  • to further develop essay writing skills, focusing particularly on expressing ideas and the style of writing
  • to consolidate APA citation and referencing skills
  • to give effective oral presentations
  • to lead and participate in group discussions

Course components

Writing
The content of this part of the course is designed to support your learning in Nursing 1202: Health Promotion and Health Education.  In small groups, you will be working together to conduct some literature research on the topic you have selected for the Health Promotion Project.  Each individual in the group will be in charge of collecting a part of the information from reading sources which will be shared with group members in preparation for the writing of an individual literature research essay.

Oral

  • Discussions: each group will lead a discussion.  Four discussions will be held between weeks 2 and 7.
  • Oral presentations: a formal group presentation on the topic selected for the discussion will be given at the end of the semester.

 

Assessment 

The course grade will be awarded on the following:

Literature research essay                         40%
Final oral presentation                             40%
Participation                                           20%
   (including other assignments submitted to the teacher, class participation, and participation in discussions)                             

Students who fail to complete an assessed task will be given a failure grade for that task.

You will also need to fulfill the minimum requirement of 80% attendance to pass the course.
